Crisp Oatmeal Cookies

1 cup butter or margarine, or of each
   (if you use all butter use about 2 tbsp. less)
2 tbsp. water
2 tbsp. maple syrup
1 cup flour

1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1 cup sugar
2 1/2 cups quick cooking oatmeal (not instant)
About 1/2 cup sugar for topping

Melt shortening with water, add syrup. Sift dry ingredients, mix thoroughly with oatmeal then combine all and chill. Form into 1 balls. Flatten on parchment lined cookie sheet with the bottom of a small glass dipped in sugar. 12 to the cookie sheet. Bake for 12-15 minutes at 350. Remove from cookie sheet immediately and cool on rack. (just pull parchment paper to cooling rack)
