Florida Federation of Square Dancers
President's Message

April Showers and April Fools!   Well, I wasn’t fooled.  I was visiting a friend who had an “Alexa”.  I asked; “Alexa, what is the history of square dancing?”  She said according to the information I have found: Here is what I found “Dance as a form of exercise has a long history in China.  The Lushi Chunqiu, an encyclopedia compiled in the third century B.C.E., during the Spring and Autumn period, describes how, two millennia earlier in the time of Emperor Yao, people began to dance slowly in order to reinvigorate their muscles after lengthy rains had kept them indoors, sometimes leading to joint diseases.    A square dance is a dance for four couples (eight dancers in total) arranged in a square, with one couple on each side, facing the middle of the square. Square dances were first documented in 16th-century England but were also quite common in France and throughout Europe. This information is found in Wikipedia, is this the information you were looking for?  I was amazed!  So, I had to ask “Alexa, do you know any Square Dance Music?  She replied; ‘Square dance music’ is usually defined as music performed for square dancing.  So, me being intrigued I had to ask; “Alexa can you play some square dance music?”  She replied I cannot find any square dance music but I have Amazon Music Country.  Hmmmmm…that made the wheels in my brain to start turning!  See Square Dancing will continue into our future.  We just need to ask the right questions and we will continue to spread the fun throughout the future… Speaking of the future of square & rounding dancing.
