Florida Federation of Square Dancers
President's Message

Well the New Year is here and it promises to be an exciting year in the Florida Square Dance community. There are new things effecting the Federation. The first is the Federation elected new officers at the November meeting. The officers are: Presidents Dennis and Nancy Taylor, Vice Presidents Ray and Elsa Huddleston, Secretary Cheryl Miller, Treasurer Linda Tester, and Parliamentarians Ed Drexel and Terry Wetherby. If you have any suggestions or recommendations that could improve our activity contact any of the officers or attend one of the Federation meetings. Another new item that affects us is the change in the date of the 2017 Florida State Square and Round Dance Convention from Memorial Day Weekend to March 24 and 25, 2017. Hopefully we will see a lot of the winter visitors in March that normally have returned north by Memorial Day. Encourage any of the winter visitors you dance with to join you at the convention. Additionally The Space Coast Fiesta will be held in Titusville on February 2 and 3 instead of in January. Also during the year plans will be underway for the 2018 State Convention that will be in Daytona Beach in February. Make your plans with this change in mind. In January some clubs will be starting classes for new dancers. Be sure to support these classes whenever you can. So you can see there are several changes already planned for 2017.

Even though things are changing many things will remain constant. Many clubs will be continuing the classes that started in 2016 and celebrate the graduation of these classes. Be sure to encourage the new dancers and support the classes. Another example is the Southeast Association will hold their annual SnowFlake Frolic on January 28th. The Federation will have their annual Working Weekend and benefit dance in Orlando on February 24 and 25. On Sunday after the 2017 State Convention the Federation is scheduled to hold their meeting at the Swan Hotel in Lakeland. The Central Association will be holding their Party Weekend on April 21-23, 2017, to support the 2018 State Convention. The Northwest Association will hold their Roundup on October 27-28, 2017, in Pensacola. The West Coast Association will hold their Fall Fun Fest on November 10 and 11 in Bartow. The Northeast will hold their Fall Festival the following weekend November 17 and 18 in Jacksonville. This will be followed by The Federation Annual meeting after the Fall Festival on Sunday November 19. And of course many clubs will be holding their regular dances all through the year. We can’t forget that The National Square Dance Convention will be in Cincinnati on June 21-24, 2017. If you haven’t been to one you are missing a great time. Now is an excellent time to start a tradition of going to the NSDC each year.

As you can see in the New Year there will be many great opportunities, both new and old, for you to participate in and enjoy. Support these events and promote square dancing all year round.

Your help is needed – as of the writing of this message we don’t have volunteers to Chair the 2019 State Convention. Now is the time that this position needs to be filled so the new Chairman can work with the 2018 Chairman and gain an insight into the running of a convention. If we are to have the excellent conventions like those we have had in the past we need you to volunteer now.

See you in a square!

Dennis & Nancy Taylor

President
