What a busy,
blustery weekend our members had during our January campout! We gathered
together for the 4th weekend of the month, January 24 and 25. Olde Mill
Stream RV Resort in Umatilla is where we camped. The weather was off-kilter;
cloudy, damp, and very windy. Fortunately we had a hall in which to meet,
dance and dine.
Our hosts and hostesses were George and Sandy Oakes, Phil
and Deanna Sortore along with Jim and Laureen Kelly. I do not know the words
to explicitly express what a wonderful and outstanding weekend they provided
for everyone. Well, more on that later...
By the time all the rigs arrived, there were 20 spread
out throughout the rally area. We had guest camper/dancers among the
members. It was wonderful to have everyone visiting for the weekend.
Many arrived on Thursday, bringing with them items for
our annual fund-raiser white elephant sale, bake sale and auction. Many of
the members worked most of Friday separating and pricing everything. By the
time we were done, we had a nice array of auction and sale items.
We had a super turnout for our Friday dance, with our
members and guests and several park residents in attendance. Ron Reardon
called a terrific dance and we were fortunate to have Kim Hamilton who is
from Canada volunteer to do rounds for us.
We all were in awe while watching the fantastic video put
together by Sandy and George Oakes which was a tribute to the Shankles, our
past cuers: Pete who passed away in 2011 and his wife Jan who passed away in
December. They were Charter Members of 082; loved by us all and are sadly,
Saturday morning at 9 our sale began followed by the
auction at 10. We had a goodly turnout of camp residents (and
members!) checking out and purchasing the items. I spotted our NSDCA
Secretary, Martha Zimmerman from Chapter 128, sitting in the crowd. We
had another successful fund-raiser.
Dinner started early Saturday evening; our hosts and
hostesses had the tables decorated in our Chapter colors of red, yellow and
black along with center pieces of flowers in vases, same colors, one at each
table. First thing before food was served they were raffled off, each one
going to someone at every table! Even our napkins were red, yellow and
Our dinner was spaghetti with meatballs and hot sausage,
bread and salad and for dessert a beautiful Anniversary cake in our
Chapter colors - honoring Hitch 'n Go's 39th year! Everything was
scrumptious! We were pleased to have former members Ace and Ann Taylor and
E.B. and Sarah Keith join us for dinner. Ace and Ann also were there to
dance with us on Friday night.
Our heartfelt thanks to the hosts and hostesses for their
splendid, successful endeavor in providing not only a fantastic meal but
also a reprieve for the Board members who in the past were responsible for
this weekend. Actually, this is the fourth year Sandy and George have helped
the Board in this way. The Board members greatly appreciate all their hard
Then it was on to early rounds - we were pleased to have
guest cuer Bev Landwehr cueing for the round dancers. She was very enjoyable
and it was fun to have her with us for the evening.
Before the square dancing began, we had the installation
of our new officers for 2014. Eddie Julian did a superb job with the
installation; it was very touching and meaningful. Our new officers are:
Phil and Deanna, Sortore, President; Jerry Ann Lapniewski, Vice President;
Tom and Jeanne Hartwig, Secretary; Fredda Barlow, Treasurer.
We welcome Clayton and Kathy Allen to our 082 family.
A big THANK YOU to everyone for everything; so many
helped in various different ways to make the weekend the success it was - it
all is appreciated.
