This month's outing took place at Olde Mill Stream RV
Resort in Umatilla during the 4th weekend. Our hosts and hostesses
were George and Sandy Oakes and Fredda Barlow along with Jim and Laureen
More on them later...
Nineteen member couples were in attendance; 2 couples arriving early
Wednesday, with quite a few folks coming in on Thursday and the rest on
Friday. The local restaurant' 'The Umatilla Inn' was a popular site
for many of us with some members dining there every evening! Pizza Hut was
another popular spot and I heard there may have been a trip made to T. G. I.
As always with our January campouts, this was a very busy weekend. This is
the month we conduct a white elephant/bake sale and auction as a club
fundraiser. So, starting sometime Friday, our members gather together,
bringing their sale items to be sorted and priced. By the end of the day,
all the mishmash of items are neatly set up on tables ready for the
shoppers! Thanks to all the women who helped price and organize.
It was nice to see and chat with former members Lee and Joyce Whitten who
stopped by to check out the event.
Early Saturday morning quite a number of the folks from the park came by to
look and buy! It soon was time for the auction which was conducted by John
Ruppel along with help from Ray Nofsinger and their wives, Wilma and Leda.
Thanks for a job well done!
There was another set of folks having a rally at the park, The Osceola Good
Sam Club. It became known to us they were very interested in seeing a square
dance demo. So with the help of our Canadian friend Kim Hamilton, Thursday
evening we were able to show them some square dance figures. A few of the
folks joined in dancing and the entire audience seemed to enjoy the demo.
Kim was also at the Friday night dance helping out with cueing some rounds.
Thank you Kim, for your help!
This is the year of our 38th Anniversary. It was celebrated with a
beautiftul cake decked out in our club colors, black/yellow/red. It was
presented for dessert by our hosts and hostesses after first serving up our
club-sponsored spaghetti dinner with salad, meatballs, sausage, bread and
fruit cocktail. The tables had beautiful centerpieces consisting of a wooden
design of our chapter logo (made by George's brother-in-law) set in ruffles
in red, black and yellow fabric (constructed by Sandy and Laureen). Fredda
made adorable candle accents. Our sincere thanks to all of you for, as
always, an outstanding showing of beauty and fellowship.
Our early rounds Saturday started at 7:15 so we could have installation of
our 2013 officers at 7:45 before the dance: President, Al and Mary Teschner;
Vice President, John and Wilma Ruppel; Secretary, Tom and Jeanne Hartwig;
Treasurer, Fredda Barlow. Thank you to Ace Taylor for doing the
Our dances both nights were packed with fun and laughter. Plus a little
craziness thrown in. All of which adds to the enjoyment of our caller, Ron
Reardon.! We all enjoyed his calling and were happy to welcome back Jan
Shankle who cued the rounds. Saturday's dance was followed by a wine and
Thank you to Tom and Eivor Brown for the years of service as various officer
positions of our chapter - you served us well!
I want to thank our Canadian friends Kim and Lillian Hamilton and Tom and
Barbara Haffie for being there with us at our dances - thank you Lillian for
your help with photo-taking.
I also want to take this opportunity to thank our web-master, Bruce Morgan.
I appreciate his help and the many suggestions he has given me over the
months/years! He knows I think he is awesome!
Sandy Oakes goes over and above every month designing and sending greeting
cards to our members as needed, we are so happy she will continue to do this
And most of all, let me acknowledge our former Activities Directors, George
and Sandy Oakes. Over the years they have done a fabulous job caring for our
kitchen items and helping out in the kitchens at all camp-outs. They are a
super couple! Ray and Leda Nofsinger are our new Activities Directors.
