The KOA Campground in Port Orange, FL was our destination to
send off 2010 and welcome in 2011! We had 10 member couples
pull in with their rigs along with 3 guest rigs. Some
arrived as early as Wednesday, December 29 with several
arriving both on Thursday, December 30 and Friday, December
Along with our members, our guests were: daughter Kim and
grandchildren Tyler and Lauren of our Vice-Presidents, the
Kellys; the Riley's daughter Nancy, granddaughter Sammi;
Riley friends, Norma and John; and our NSDCA National
Secretary, Roger Tipps.
It did not take long for our members to realize and find
some excellent restaurants for meals throughout the long
weekend in the area! Imagine - in Florida! - an Italian
restaurant with walls filled with Pittsburgh Steelers
memorabilia....and serving excellent food!
The KOA had informed our Vice Presidents when they set up
the camping details with them months ago we would be welcome
to join in their New Year's Eve celebration. Several of us
gathered that evening in the hall joining in the festivities
with other KOA campers. We brought snacks to share and our
own drinks, the campground also supplied quite a variety of
goodies. The DJ was there when we arrived and he played
non-stop music throughout the night until the midnight hour
started to approach.
Our entertainment for the evening actually turned out to be
the teenagers mentioned above along with our caller's
teenage grandson, Aaron. They put on quite a show with their
dancing and antics. Enjoyed watching Sammi manuever with her
leg in a cast! They are a wonderful bunch of kids, very
supportive and caring to all of our members.
Some of our members went to a New Year's Eve square dance
being held close by and reported they had a fantastic time
On Saturday, we had our usual pot-luck. Earlier in the day
we were very pleased to see one of our couples arrive sans
their motorhome, we were glad Sandy and George were able to
be with us for dinner. Our cuers Pete and Jan Shankle, along
with their son, Dennis, also arrived in time for the dinner
bell. At our General meeting which followed, our President
announced we had a new member: Roger Tipps, our NSDCA
National Secretary. Welcome, Roger!
Soon it was time for our square dance - it may have been a
small hall, but the laughs and dancing were at an all-time
high, thanks to our cuers and our caller, Ron Reardon.
Several couples from The Great Outdoors Campground visited
and danced with us. Always happy to see them and fun to
At one point in the evening, Ron had the aforementioned
teenagers on the floor square dancing. Not only were they
instantly dancing better than some of us, they were grinning
from ear to ear throughout! It was great to see them having
a grand time, I am sure I speak for all in our chapter when
I say - wish they (and several other kids/grandkids of our
members!) were with us every month!
Our next outing at the end of January will be in Umatilla
with the installation of our 2011 officers, plus we will be
having an auction and elephant sale...come join us...
