December 2008

Beautiful Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont, FL was the setting for our 'old year ending/new year beginning' camping get-together. Sixteen couples arrived to set up camp on Wednesday, December 31st. After light suppers, we were ready to prepare for our outdoor New Year's Eve celebration. Several canopies had been set up over picnic tables, a roaring fire was begun, snacks of great varieties were brought forth, we gathered at the Kelly's outdoor flat TV and counted down the seconds with icon Dick Clark.

The meals for each day (Thursday - Saturday) were planned in advance so everyone knew what to bring. One evening we brought our steaks to grill, another evening we had hot dogs, hamburgers or sausages, and the easiest of all was the evening we had pizzas delivered! One morning, a pancake breakfast was prepared by Phil Sortore and Jim Kelly, another morning they outdid themselves with a superb breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, toast. More than once, the comment was made to suggest we rename our chapter 'Hitch 'n Eat'!

All couples were asked to bring a load of wood - we were able to have bon-fires every evening tended by Jim Kelly. Speaking of Jim, wish you all could have been there when he came out of his motor home dressed in an inflated pig costume and not just strolled around in it for all of us, but did some jogging down the loop with several of us trailing behind!

Several couples brought their bikes, many did plenty of walking, games were played. However, something new was enjoyed by several of the campers.....We Wii-ed! Wii-bowling, Wii-golfing, Wii-hula-hooping, Wii-ski slaloms and Wii-yoga! We knew we were playing long hours when other campers walked by and commented: 'The bowling tournament is still going on!'

So, thanks go out to our fire bug, our chefs, Kellys for use of their Wii, Sortores for the party hats and noisemakers. Thanks to Dick Fournier for setting up our reservations so many months ago and thanks to Ace Taylor for the info in our newsletter, The Snooper, so we all knew how the time was to unfold. Also, thanks to everyone who brought extra food and helped in myriad ways to make the gorgeous weekend one to remember!
