NSDCA Chapter 168

News Letters

December 27, 2013

MERRY CHRISTMAS
HAPPY NEW YEAR

December is such a busy time of the year and we kicked it off with an awesome campout at Oklawaha RV Park on December 6 & 7th with some of the most wonderful people.

We had over 60 people & 30 + Rigs all celebrating the Christmas Season with as many as 7 squares up dancing to Bill Chesnut & Ann Hadsall Cueing the rounds with a floor full of round dancers.  Many pictures were taken by Tim Hill, Gail LaRue & Joanne Engum.  I will have most of those pictures at the campout in January at Oklawaha.  I have attached just a few to this email.

Friday night we started with a social boxed dinner followed by square & round dancing.

Gypsy's Square had their installation of new officers with Maxine Thomas (or was it Paxine) presiding over the ceremony.  Taking the office of President for the Gypsy’s will be Gail & Gary LaRue, Vice President Ron & Linda Imus, Treasure Jay & Teri Peck, and Secretary Judi Cobett.  Appreciation gifts were given out to Joanne Engum and Dale Fredrickson for the many years of service to the Gypsy's.

Gifts where presented to Bill & Mary Chesnut and to Ann Hadsall a big  THANK YOU to all.

We started our Saturday morning by heading down to Hog Valley Thrift Center where most of us bought lots of interesting items.  Then of course we all lined up with our lawn chairs for the Hog Valley Christmas Parade.  For those of you that have not experienced this event it is about ½ mile long Parade with the Hog Valley residence & our very own Miss Piggy (Gail LaRue) hitching a ride on the back of a pick up truck!! Oh and Bill Called a square from the back of his pick up truck while we had 3 squares dancing in the street to start the Parade.   It was our 1st experience & hopefully not our last!  Hog Valley has  1 bar, 1 Thrift Center, 1 Community Center, 1 Church, 1 small store, 1 restaurant and 1 fire station and it’s 20 miles from Salt Springs to the East or Ocala to the West.

After the Parade we headed back to the Park to have a Hot Dog, Bratwurst Lunch prepared by the Gypsy’s.  Karen Gayne taught us how to make Kumihimo bracelets while Bill Chesnut did some advanced workshop.  Others got together for a Bridge Card Game Tournament.

Dinner was prepared by Jay & Teri Peck with all the Gypsy’s pitching in to help.  Dinner was awesome.  Thanks to everyone that helped & brought desserts and snacks for both Fri & Sat. nights.  Food was in abundance, if you went away hungry there was something wrong with you as I gained weight just looking at everything.
The gift exchange after the dance on Saturday night was so much fun.  Someone took my Wine from me, so I wined all night!!

We did miss our friends that could not attend this campout & hope you will join us at the next campout in Oklawaha in January.

We had our Square Wheels covered dish dinner on Saturday, December 14 at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Gainesville.  Everyone brought their favorite covered dish and again we ate!!!!!

Bill Squared us up & Ann Cued a round dance before we had our gift exchange.

Bob & Barbara Rosenthal, Presidents gave Mary Chesnut, Martha Zimmerman & Marilyn lovely Pointesettia Plants.  They also gave Bill & Ann Christmas envelopes.  Bob & Barbara also gave Bill a Ceramic Pig & Tee Shirt that says If  Pigs Can Fly which represents how Bill & Mary got Married, you must ask Bill about this!

All in all it has been a fantastic Holiday Season & only to get better with Square Dancing at our Clubs & enjoying friends & family.  We hope you all have a safe & wonderful Holiday Season.

CHRISTMAS CAMPOUT NEWSLETTER

Dale and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a blessed and bountiful Thanksgiving…..enjoy your turkey but mostly enjoy your family and friends.

Plans for our weekend at Oklawaha on December 6th, 7th and 8th have been finalized.  The Christmas outing is hosted by the board as always and we will do our best to make it the greatest campout ever.  (of course we only will be out-doing ourselves so it will co-inside with all of the other great ones we have hosted!)  The campground does not require you to call ahead for reservations as the sites are on a first come-first served basis.  We have reserved 25-30 sites so they ask that you come into the office and register when you arrive.  The rally rate remains at $26.73 per night. We do ask though that you contact either Jay and Teri  teripeck1@gmail.com 386-672-8677 or me at joengum@cfl.rr.com 904-707-0261  to let us know if you are coming so Jay and Teri can rustle up enough of their delicious cuisine for our Saturday evening dinner (thank you Gypsy treasury) and so that we know how to plan all the other “special” things we have in store.

If you have not already done so we will be collecting annual dues at the campout, $30.00 per couple which includes National and Club annual dues.  Associate dues are $10.00 per couple annually.  We are asking you to bring a dessert and whatever you think will add to the holiday fare while dancing.  Here is what we have planned:  Friday night we will have a bag lunch social in the hall at 5:00 p.m.  Just pack your lunch and come on over.  That way we won’t have to worry about weather etc. and we can kick off the weekend with grub and gab.

We are pleased to announce the new board elected at our O’Leno meeting:

Presidents Gail and Gary LaRue
Vice-Presidents Linda and Ron Imus
Secretaries Judi and John Corbett
Treasurers Teri and Jay Peck
Past-Presidents Dale Fredrickson & Joanne Engum

A very short Installation ceremony planned by Maxine Thomas will precede the dance at 7:15 Friday evening.   Bill will be at his calling best as will Ann cueing rounds between tips.  We can pick up the gab once again at our wine and cheese after party.

Here we will be, out in the wilderness and once again we will be treated to a fun Saturday morning just down the road.  The annual Hog Valley Christmas Festival and Parade is such fun and word has it our wonderful caller will be squaring us up to partake with the numerous decorated floats and the beautiful “Hog Queen” once again flitting in and out.  Girls don’t forget about that fun thrift store shopping, and yes….men are welcome too.  Back in time on Saturday to have a Brats and Sauerkraut lunch cooked up after the parade by the board with chips and pickles along with some of the desserts brought in by the club members…..all for the price of $1.00 per person.  We will definitely have to participate in the afternoons activities to wear off those calories to make room for some more at our 5:30 feast.

I am inserting the email from Karen Gagne in regard to one of those activities:

Kumihimo is Japanese braiding with multiple strands ... using a simple disc and bobbins.  I will assemble a kit of all necessary supplies ... including beads ... for a bracelet.  Check out Google for a visual if you did not see me at Oleno ...   Cost will be about $20.00 ... Michael's and Joanne's are flooding my mailbox with discounts which I will pass on to you when I get a final assembling of supplies ... I will be available Friday afternoon of the Dec. campout to get any 'eager beavers' started and continue on Sat. around the Hog Valley parade. I learned in an evening workshop ... You too will have a finished KUMIHIMO beauty by Sat. and on your way to producing beautiful Christmas gifts!!!    I need a commitment to purchase supplies ... Karen Gagne,  5941 Marville Cr.  Port Orange, FL  32127          KGagne@clearwire.net   or phone 386-304-4706.We also will have a little workshop, a little line dancing, a little bit of card playing, a little bit of decorating….lots of choices.  Dinner is the club's Christmas gift to all of you along with a little “present” in your gift bags at the table….. Thanks Gypsy treasury!  We will dance from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday evening.  Gypsy weekends are always square dance apparel optional but let’s dress in our holiday finery for this special evening.  (Optional of course)  Our after party will once again be our famous Chinese Gift Swap, so each person who wishes to get in on the action should bring a gift ($5.00 minimum,).  With the board hosting you all are invited to breakfast Sunday morning at 10AM?? (naw, I tried that once before and it didn’t work so see you at 8:30 a.m.) Come see what we have cookin’ as we bid farewell and look forward to the January weekend hosted by the Square Wheels.

8-23-2013

What a wonderful weekend at Wild Frontier RV Park  with dancing, golf, workshop, trivia, book sale, after parties and Sunday morning breakfast.
We started out square & round dancing on Friday night with Bill Chesnut, calling the squares & Ann Hadsall, cueing the rounds.
We had several guests this weekend,  Laura & Dennis Ramsey, Ed & Elle Koerner, Allan Byland and Lolly Adkison.
The Ramseys, the Koerners, and Lolly Adkison all became new members of Square Wheels and Allen Byland became an associate member.
Denny and Sue Fogle renewed their membership.
We are certainly glad to have all of these folks as members of our club!

Saturday morning Bill, Don MacGregor, Paul & Marilyn Scott played Captains choice golf & yes we played with most of the Captains Balls.
I do believe a couple of us should give up golf completely.
In the afternoon we had a workshop with Bill & played Trivial Pursuit with 3 groups of excellent players.
Hand & Foot who were playing Hand & Foot cards along with playing Trivia.
Salty Dog team playing Bridge, workshop with Bill & Trivia at the same time,
and the winners were the Square Gypsy’s with 69 points with Barbara running the answers up before everyone else.
We had several quests from Jacksonville at the dance on Friday & Saturday night.
Saturday night Jack & Kathy McKinney, Linda Tester, Sue & Denny Fogle came to promote the Fall Festival
in Jacksonville on 11/15 & 16th at Palms Presbyterian Church, 3410- 3rd Street South, Jacksonville Beach.
Camping is at Hanna Park, Jacksonville.
If you have not purchased ribbons you may do so from Mary Chesnut, Joanne Engum or myself.

We had after parties both Friday & Saturday nights.
Thank you to Jay & Terri Peck, Bill & Nancy Brown, Bill & Mary Chesnut who served up a great Sunday morning breakfast.

We missed all our friends that could not camp with us this past weekend.
Happy 80th Birthday to Joanne Engum who celebrated with family & friends on Friday night, we missed you all.

8-17-2013

Hi all…….for those of you who attended the Camporee at Wekiva Falls…we are  glad you had such a great time.
For those of us (Dale and I included due to the fact that Dale’s new RV was not ready yet)
who were not able to attend,  let’s make a point to put it on our calendars for next year
at Bushnell with a “Beach Party” theme.
Many thanks to Gail LaRue and her crew for decorating the hall and the pictures show what a great job they did.
I knew I did not have to worry, things were in good hands.
Thanks again Gail for fulfilling our duties and attending the meetings.
Good news for NSDCA, she has volunteered,
along with all of the help she can get from #168, to “beach” up the hall in 2014!
I am enclosing the slate of officers that Ron Imus, nominating committee           chairman has presented:

Presidents Gail and Gary LaRue
Vice-Presidents Linda and Ron Imus
Secretaries Judi and John Corbett
Treasurers Teri and Jay Peck

We will have a short meeting at O’Leno at which time we will announce this slate to all of the members present.
There will an opportunity for additional nominations for each office.
A vote will be taken for the final nominated slate.
According to our by-laws the new officers will be sworn in at our December campout at Ocklawaha
and will take over their positions on January 1st.
As past-presidents Dale and I will remain on the board and will do all we can
to keep the Gypsy Squares “The Best Club in the Area” (along with the Square Wheels)….right?
We are happy that the combining of the two clubs with our wonderful caller,
each keeping their club identity with their own chapter numbers took place during our term of office.
It has been such a boost to both clubs and the friendliness brings joy and fun to the dance floor and to all of our social events.

You have all received Marilyn Scotts Square Wheels Newsletter and can draw much information from it.
Thank you #128 for agreeing to shared newsletters eliminating repetition
and proving once again that two chapters can work together so successfully.
If you did not receive it please email me joengum@cflrr.com  and I will check our email list to make sure you are listed.
This newsletter is directed mostly to the Gypsy Squares but I will have Judi forward it to the Square Wheels also.

Looking forward to seeing you at O’Leno.

GYPSY SQUARES AND SQUARE WHEELS JUNE NEWSLETTER

At the present time we have decided that whichever club hosts the monthly campout will be the one writing the newsletter.  Marilyn did a great job with the April one so hopefully you will enjoy Joanne’s.  Writing about such a fantastic “ducky” time at Williston Crossing in May will be a piece of cake.  We cannot thank Gail and Gary LaRue - committee chairmen and Ron and Linda Imus - their dedicated co-workers for one of the most fun weekends we have had in a long time.  (Imus’ had so much fun they volunteered to chair the campout at Williston in 2014)!  Mark May 16-18 on your calendar so you don’t miss that one!!

The Friday evening “sub and chip” supper was a “ducky” way to begin the weekend.  It was a byo subs and they made for interesting conversation……”you have THAT on your sub”….but all were delicious I am told.  Fortunately there was a subway close by but they didn’t serve duck meat subs!!  The pavilion was very nice for the evening dance, a cool breeze in addition to their newly installed ceiling fans (just for us of course).  Ann started off with early rounds and Bill was his usual party mood self, calling lots of fun tips.  We had 7 couples from clubs in the area join us for the evening (some of whom were Bills groupies - right Bill?) Our “ducky” social after party was held in the Gazebo. Our Duckmaster Gail started the weekend off with a “ducky” quiz at supper, one of the fun games she planned for every event.  There were ducks everywhere, even duck hats were provided for the committee members and the officers, callers and cuers.  She thought of everything to keep us reminded that we were having a “ducky” time.

The weather was a little warm but the golfers took off for the course Saturday morning, while most of the others did a little antiquing in town before gathering at the Ivy House for a delicious lunch and a little gift shopping.  It is a “ducky” place, a must do in Williston.

Saturday afternoon was one of the wettest afternoons many of us have spent in a while.  The wet t-shirt contest (you will have to ask Gail about that) was followed by a gun fight (yes we all came prepared with squirt guns) but the king of the guns was none other than Ivan Hadsall…..power by the hour Ivan (thanks for the bath - right Barb?).  The next event was the shaving contest.  Now that was really “ducky”, the partners were give bibs and the guys cans of shaving cream which they proceeded to squirt across the table on their partners face.  You know what is coming now…..they used squirt guns to “shave” the cream off.  It was hilarious.  The ducks in the pond followed that event, which was a good swim in their beautiful pool.  Such a fun afternoon and it was great that the golfers returned in time to join in.  Prizes were awarded for all of the events, many of us went home with some of the cutest little ducks…good job duckmaster Gail.

With all of the day’s activities we  came to the pavilion with appetites, easily satisfied with  the delicious covered dishes and a multitude of “ducky” desserts.

Early rounds kicked off the evening, a good job by Ann and Bill called some really “ducky” tips.  We had visitors from outside the USA who were so fascinated by our dancing that before long Bill had them out on the floor and their faces beaming after they finished a teaching and singing tip.  Future foreign dancers we hope.  Our duckmaster Gail even had a game for our after party held once again in the pavilion.  Lots and lots of wine bottle ring tosses, lots and lots of failures, lots and lots of laughs, lots and lots more of “ducky” fun.

One of the “ducky-ist” things of all was the build your own breakfast burrito breakfast.  Jay Peck was in the beautiful outdoor kitchen doing his thing of course.  Thanks for the help Jay and Teri and once again thanks to the committee for such a wonderful, fun “ducky” weekend.

The State Convention found lots of gypsy’s and square wheels in attendance, dancing, visiting and having a great time.  We have a break for a couple of months, but don’t just rest up, keep those dancing shoes shined and enjoy your area clubs and special dances.

Mark these dates on your calendar:

62nd National Square Dance Convention in Oklahoma City, June 26-29th, 2013.
56th Annual International NSDCA Camporee, Goshen, Indiana, August 20-22nd, 2013

The Square Wheels will be hosting the next Campout:
August  16-18    Wilderness RV Park
2771 N. E. 102nd Ave. Road, Silver Springs
Old Colby Woods Campground
Hwy 40 E past Silver Springs
After the bridge over the Oklawaha River on your left
$20.50 a night plus tax
352-625-1122
Martha will make your reservations.
The GPS Address is 10313 E. Hwy 40, Silver Springs, 34488

Have a wonderful summer and look forward to squaring up with y’all some time, some place.  Make sure you check out our websites at www.floridasquaredance.com/gypsysqures/index.html  (good job webmaster Bruce).         128 and 168 are two of the best numbers ever!

I am taking this opportunity to welcome Don and Sharon Sportsman, new Gypsy members.  They attended our campout as visitors and they had such a “ducky” time they joined the club before they left.  It is so nice to see both clubs adding to their memberships proving “the more the merrier” is a true fact.

Scroll down for some of the photos of our fun “ducky” weekend.   I am new at this formatting so as you can see I do not have it perfected yet.  Dale is in Jacksonville but I did have to call upon his expertise, thanks Dale.

We hope everyone had a wonderful Easter and are now enjoying our beautiful spring weather once again.  I am resending this newsletter because we must know by Tuesday how many campsites we will be using.  As I said, it is a bit different here and this is must info for them.  SO……if you have not yet made your reservation please do it by Tuesday noon.  Gail and Gary LaRue are meeting with the staff over there on Tuesday at 1:30 to work out final details for our campout.  It is a beautiful place and we are hoping we can keep it on our list of options.  We have been having such good turnouts for our weekends so hope this will be also.  The prices are great and Gail has a lot planned for us.  If you have any questions please email me or call 386-760-0323.  I hope to see 30 rigs once again.  Yellow Rocks, Joanne

MAY CAMPOUT – WILLISTON CROSSINGS RV PARK     MAY 17TH-19TH 2013

We hope everyone has this date on their calendar and will enjoy our first visit to the campground.  Their policy is just a little different so I am forwarding this information on today.  I am enclosing the map on their brochure so you have an idea just where the sites we have reserved are.  Now I say reserved, but it is actually “requested” and they try to get us all together as much as possible.  They suggest we call and make our reservations ASAP to make that happen.  As you can see there are some grass sites and adjacent to them are back-in sites.  The rally rate is $21.36 tax included for the grass sites and $29.15 for the back-ins.  This is a description from their brochure:
Williston Crossings RV Resort offers a variety of RV Sites. Pull-thru, grass sites (30 amp only) and back-ins all with full hook-ups, Cable, Wi-Fi and Country Setting. Open, spacious Sites on Concrete with wide paved roads throughout the RV Park.  Dale and I have reserved site #484.  So check out the map and call with your reservation.  If you have any questions reply to me joengum@cfl.rr.com and also you can go to their website www.willistoncrossingrv.com for more info.  Gail and Gary LaRue, weekend hosts have some interesting things planned (their agenda and further info will be sent closer to the date) and along with Bill’s calling and Ann’s cueing it will be a super time.  Something new for the Gypsy’s and Square Wheels….our times together keep getting better and better.  So call now and we will see everyone at Wild Frontier April 18-20th.

Greetings everyone….ah “time”….where does it go? It certainly flies by when you are traveling, camping, cruising, having fun and enjoying those important things in life, right? This was to be a February newsletter but “time” got away from me and I do want to keep in touch and pass on all the information regarding our wonderful clubs, the Gypsy’s and the Square Wheels. Our joint campouts have been nothing but a huge success and all the dancers clamoring to join is a perfect example! Thanks Mr. Bill for making that possible and thanks to all the members who are making this transition in such a fun and positive manner. Thanks to you too Mary, you are the best taw ever!

I am including an excerpt from the article I wrote in the Grapevine and Bow and Swing publications as I am sure not all of you subscribe. They are very informative and keep you in the loop, I recommend checking into getting a subscription. It reads as follows:

February 17th-18th was a great weekend in Lake City, not only for the campers, square dancers and street vendors, but also the hundreds of people in attendance. It was balmy and sunny during the day, and warm enough to have 1 after party in the gazebo. Those two fireplaces came in handy tho! The club house felt mighty cozy for Saturday’s party. It was so nice to have Bubba and Cindy join us. The Gypsy’s make this their February camping weekend and it truly is a special one. The Friday night dance at Teen Town Recreation Center sponsored by #128 was a good way to set the mood for this fun weekend. The Dixie Dancers did an outstanding job hosting the Saturday dance at the Toyota Showroom. The silent auction, the beautifully decorated hall and tables laden with some of the best food, snacks and desserts in the south make this an event to mark on your calendar for 2013. One of Louisiana’s best, Bubba Mingus was the guest caller, and along with our own Bill Chesnut and cuers Lisa Wall and Ralph Beekman the dancing was awesome. Abe Lincoln and General Robert E. Lee with many of their southern dignitaries led the grand march in full costume, a sight to behold…they even danced a tip. The Sunday breakfast served by #128 was outstanding, thanks for the TLC, you sent all of us off looking forward to our March campout in White Springs.

The January Campout, hosted by the Square Wheels, was a huge success.  Lots of dancing, eating, crafting, work-shopping, visiting and winding up each evening with the well-attended after parties.  Just think, we will be back to that same campground on the 15th for more of the same.  Joint camping is the best!!

I am sure all of you have received Marilyn’s awesome Square Wheels Newsletter - great job Marilyn.  Her description of the Blue and Grey weekend, along with the pictures, was great.  Therefore I feel it is not necessary to repeat it.  I will mention though, that both of our clubs went home with attendance award banners.  The Vagabond Squares placed first, the Square Wheels took second place and the Gypsy Squares third... quite the honor with so many in attendance.  If you didn’t make it this year put it on your calendar for 2014; it is a winner weekend.

Karen Gagne and Ann Dunsworth have planned a fun St. Patty’s Day Weekend at Oklawaha March 15th,16th and 17th.  Square dance apparel optional both nights.   I am including the agenda they sent to me:

The busy busy holidays are winding down, but not for us as it is never the time for us to sit back and do nothing.  (Sounds like a good idea eh….if only we had the time).   We hope you are all geared up for our first 2013 Campout.  The Square Wheels are hosting on January 18-20th at one of our favorite campgrounds…..we will be back at Ocklawaha!  We had such a wonderful December Christmas weekend, filled with lots of great round, line and square dancing and it left all of us looking forward to the upcoming date.  It was so great to see most everyone busy together in the clubhouse throughout, decorating, knitting scarfs with the help of Karen and Ann, playing cards and socializing steadily.  Bill’s suggestion for both clubs camping together surely has worked out perfectly.  The weekend cuisine was extra special beginning with the good bag lunch packers for Friday’s social supper, the Corbett's sloppy joes lunch Saturday noon, Jay and Teri’s absolutely delicious roast pork dinner Saturday evening…..and the finale biscuit and gravy breakfast Sunday morning.  Now add all of those things together, throw in the annual Chinese gift exchange and great after parties and you will agree….a fun time for all.  Gail LaRue orchestrated an impressive (and funny…thanks Gail) installation ceremony for the 2013 officers, all of whom have been your officers for the past 5 years.  Time for some new ones, eh…..think about it.  We do have a great club with a super caller, thanks for everything Bill and Mary and thanks to all of you for your support.

FYI, I am including an excerpt from the January Square Wheels Newsletter with the details of the January Campout:

Friday night dance at 7:30 PM is casual.  On Saturday Square Wheels will host a hot dog lunch.  Bring a side dish and your place setting.  Saturday night 5:00 PM covered dinner and dance at 7:30 PM, square dance attire.   Sunday Breakfast 8:00 AM. Let Martha know if you are camping, she will make the reservations. 352-336-5311. the cost is $26.73 per night.  February 15, 16, 17, 2013 – the Blue Grey Festival.
